We’ve all heard stereotypes about Dutch mail order brides – tall, blond, blue eyed, and from Amsterdam.

But there’s a lot more to know about these pretty incredible ladies.

What You Should Know About Dutch Brides

First, we want to set the record straight about a couple things:

  1. A “Dutch mail order wife” isn’t really a thing. While men still like to look for “mail order brides,” that’s very outdated.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find yourself an international Dutch bride!
But what you’re really looking for is an international dating service – that’s the modern way of doing it. And, if that’s what you’re looking for, we can help you with that at the end of this article.
  2. Second – Amsterdam is just ONE Dutch city. If you don’t want to step on a Dutch woman’s toes, make sure you don’t assume she is from Amsterdam. In fact, you may want to forget a lot of stereotypes you’ve heard about Dutch people.

Ok, but you’re probably wondering what Dutch brides ARE really like.

We can help you with that, too

Top 6 Things to Know About a Dutch Woman

There are many stereotypes about people from the Netherlands. But which are true, and which aren’t?

What are Dutch women actually like?

Here are the top 6 things we think you should know about a Dutch woman before you pursue one. While some of them are stereotypes, they are ones that the Dutch themselves agree are true.

She is from the Netherlands

Many Americans don’t really know where Dutch people are from.
If you hope to date a Dutch woman, though, you should DEFINITELY know a bit about her country.

Remember this: she is NOT from Amsterdam; she is NOT from Holland; she is NOT German.
A Dutch woman is from the actual country of The Netherlands. Because of a lot of history we won’t go into now, many folks think Holland or Amsterdam is the name of their country or where they are from, but that’s not true.

People also mistake the Dutch for being German. Many think their accents are similar. But NEVER tell a Dutch woman that she is German – it won’t go over well.

The Netherlands sit to the west of Germany, just north and east of Belgium. Holland is a major province in the Netherlands, and is where Amsterdam (one of the best known cities in the Netherlands) is, but is not the country itself.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s move on.

She is unapologetically direct

In Dutch culture, people are direct.
They call this being honest while foreigners sometimes call them rude. The Dutch share their opinions honestly. The want to get directly to the point. They think politeness is dishonest or fake. A Dutch woman will tell you what she thinks or if she doesn’t like something without hesitating.
While not everyone is this way, most Dutch agree this “stereotype” is accurate.

She doesn’t eat a fancy lunch

In the Netherlands, a piece of cheese between two slices of bread, or hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) on buttered bread, are typical lunches. They don’t like to fuss over their midday meal. They keep it practical and simple.

She will be on time

The Dutch prefer order, and they stick to their schedule.
If a Dutch woman agrees to meet you at 7:00 pm, she will be there right on time (and she will expect you to be, too). Punctuality is a big deal.

She knows how to pinch pennies

People from the Netherlands love to save their money. It’s not because they don’t earn well – they actually make good money. But they love to buy cheap and save as much as they can.
A Dutch girl often brags about how cheaply she bought her outfit or groceries rather than boasting over how expensive it was.
Basically, you can expect Dutch wives to be smart with money.

She really is beautiful

We know it’s a stereotype, but Dutch women really are extraordinarily beautiful. Whether blond or brunette, they tend to be tall and athletic, and many do have those captivating, light eyes. You can’t go wrong with Dutch beauty.

So, to sum up, you can expect a Dutch wife to be straight forward, practical, and frugal. She won’t mince words, waste time, or waste money on frivolous things.

But what does this mean about romance and relationships? What is it like to date Dutch brides?

Dating Culture Among Single Dutch Women

Dating in the Netherlands is a bit different than in America. The Dutch are more progressive and very frugal and practical. Hospitality and generosity, even among couples, is not really a thing.

But here are some things that you can expect when you date a Dutch woman.

What to Expect When Dating A Dutch Mail Order Wife

She may approach you first.
This is pretty common among many of the northern European countries where gender equality is well established. Women often make the first move to initiate a conversation or date with a guy rather than the other way around. This is partly because men in their country no longer initiate.
So, if you do go to the Netherlands and see a girl you like, you should definitely approach her and say something. Just respect her if she says she’s not interested.

She’s not in a rush to get married.
In fact, recent stats (from 2022) show the average marrying age for women from the Netherlands is over 35! Marriage really isn’t seen as a cultural requirement or priority anymore, so it may not be on her radar at all. If it is, she’ll be perfectly fine taking her time arriving at it. So don’t rush her.

She wants to enjoy the moment or gezellig.

“Enjoying the moment” or “having a good time” is a common Dutch phrase. The Dutch spend a lot of time just enjoying themselves and not worrying too much about the next thing.

She’ll probably expect to “go Dutch” on the bill after the first date.

However, she probably won’t call it “going Dutch” (this phrase actually started in the U.S.). In the Netherlands, folks are pretty individualistic, and gender equality is firmly established. Everyone simply splits everything.

She will probably still expect you to pay for the first date.

Even with gender equality, and the expectation to split the costs for dates and outings, women still typically expect the men to pay for the first date. However, she may offer to pay for the next one or offer to split the bill.
So, if you’re going on a first date with a woman from the Netherlands, definitely offer to pay for the first date (but be sensitive to her wishes if she wants to split).

She’ll expect to split things equally.

Whether expenses or household chores, women expect the men to pull their weight. Remember, equality is huge in the Netherlands.

Marriage Among Dutch Women: The Process

So, you’ve found yourself a Dutch bride-to-be?

Congrats! You’ve hit the jackpot. Marrying a Dutch woman isn’t just about tying the knot—it’s a journey full of charm, tradition, and yes, a little paperwork.

Here’s a quick guide to what you’re signing up for (beyond love, of course):

Step 1: Civil Marriage First

In the Netherlands, the government takes the lead. You’ll need to have a civil ceremony (burgerlijke ceremonie) at the town hall. This is the official, legally binding part.

  • Who’s in charge? A registrar officiate.
  • Where? Usually at the town hall, though some locations offer scenic or historic venues.
  • Why first? Religious or symbolic ceremonies are lovely, but they don’t count legally without the civil part first.

Step 2: Wedding Ceremony Second

Once the legal stuff is done, it’s time for the fun part—your wedding ceremony. This is where your personalities can shine!

  • Options galore: Have a church service, a barefoot beach ceremony, or even a backyard barbecue. Anything goes.
  • Dutch style: Many Netherland weddings focus on intimacy, practicality, and fun over extravagance. Think heartfelt over fancy.

At the end of the day, marrying a Dutch woman isn’t about fancy details—it’s about building a strong, equal partnership.

Keep it practical, authentic, and full of love, and you’re on the right track. 🎉❤️
